]]> Decay often occurs on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These surfaces have deep grooves and pits. The bristles of a toothbrush (blue) cannot enter deep into these grooves to remove the plaque, or bacteria, within these grooves. Thus, bacteria lodged within these deep grooves (or fissures) can easily cause decay.

Sealants are thin coatings placed on the teeth to prevent decay. Sealants are painless to place on the teeth. No drilling of the teeth is needed.

Sealants are placed on teeth that have no decay to prevent decay. They are most often placed on the molars, premolars and even front teeth that may have grooves that may get easily decayed.

Fluoride is most effective on the smooth surfaces of the teeth. So together, sealants and fluoride, help to prevent decay on all surfaces of the teeth.

Saliva is the natural protector of your mouth

Without saliva,

  • your mouth would feel dry and be more likely to have sores
  • you would be likely to have bad breath
  • you would also be more prone to decay.
  • you would not be able to digest food well

Saliva has many functions:

Apart from lubricating your mouth, it helps to prevent tooth decay.

Decay is caused by acids produced by bacteria (plaque) that act on the sugars you eat. Saliva helps to wash away sugars. More importantly, healthy saliva can counteract the acids produced by bacteria thereby reducing the possibility of tooth decay.
